This time of year can feel like an ending - darkness spreading, fruit & leaf dropping, everything tightening into a freeze ❄️ .
.
But this slowing down is part of a larger cycle - that we are part of, too, don’t forget.
.
.
🌱 Plants and trees prepare for their dormant season - rooting themselves into the earth. .
.
✨ Seeds tuck themselves into the soil, preparing for renewal. .
.
❄️ The frost reminds us that the wheel turns with or without us - we must prepare to nourish ourselves through Winter. .
.
These cues from nature - these signs are for us! Slow down, dig deep, and nourish yourself! πŸ’—
.
My frozen garden greens are reminding me to preserve more food and plant bulbs. 🌷
.
.
πŸ›‘ Are you reading the signs? What are you noticing!

our garden is bordered by a row of lovely old wild apple trees. The drop apples keep the deer fed and outside our garden fence. The fallen fruit feed so many animals and insects, and nourishes the soil. πŸ› .
The last two windstorms have brought down a huge number of perfectly good apples. And now the freezer is full of sweet and tangy wild applesauce for cold winter mornings. ❄️
.
What do you like to make with wild apples?

these were rinsed and dried on a sheetpan overnight, coated in olive oil, maple, cinnamon & salt and roasted in 375o oven for 20 minutes, turning halfway.
.
I’ll put some on my alter and leave some outside on a plate tonight for my ancestorsπŸ’€ .

.
How sweet a thought,
How strange a deed,
To house such glory in a seed--
A berry, shining rufously,
Like scarlet coral in the sea!
A berry, rounder than a ring,
So round, it harbours everything;
So red, that all the blood of men
Could never paint it so again.
And, as I hold it in my hand,
A fragrance steals across the land:
Rich, on the wintry heaven, I see
A white, immortal hawthorn-tree. - Mary Webb

Watching the hawthorn evolve through the seasons this year has been magic. ✨
